Off-Duty Norwood Police Officer Greg Shore Saves Hockey Player’s Life Using CPR and AED
While off-duty and heading to a men’s league hockey game in Quincy, Norwood Police Officer Greg Shore sprang into action to save a skater who suffered a cardiac arrest.
Upon entering the building, Officer Shore was alerted by an acquaintance that a teammate had collapsed on the ice and was receiving initial care from an off-duty EMT.
Drawing on his professional training as a first responder certified in CPR—along with skills acquired during his military service and his time with the Norwood Police Department (NPD)—Officer Shore rushed to the scene. He quickly directed a bystander to retrieve a wall-mounted AED while joining two individuals already performing CPR. Assessing the situation, Officer Shore directed the rescuers to prepare the victim for AED application, administered two shocks that successfully reestablished a pulse, and handed off care to arriving emergency medics. Friends confirmed later that night that the victim was alert and talking at a Boston hospital.
Reflecting on the dramatic rescue, Officer Shore credited the initial life-saving efforts of the bystanders performing CPR and his own first-responder training, calling it the most memorable hockey game of his life.
