Navy Promotes Kenneth Towne


Kenneth S. Towne, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Merrill C. Towne of 96 Nichols street, Norwood, has been advanced to metalsmith third class, while serving aboard the heavy cruiser USS Des Moines, a unit of the U. S. Mediterranean Fleet.

To Wed Ensign

Mr. and Mrs. Carl W. Roes of Pikesville, Maryland, announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Elizabeth C. Roes, to Ensign R. Marinor Springer, Jr., USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy M. Springer of East Walpole. Miss Roes is a recent graduate of State Teachers College, Towson, Maryland. Ensign Springer was graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy, June 1950, and is now on duty aboard the Destroyer U.S.S. Benner of the Atlantic Fleet.

Marine McLeod Wins Promotion

PARRIS ISLAND, S. C—Marine Private First Class Dennis J. McLeod, 28 Fourth street, Norwood, climaxed training here at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot by receiving a promotion to his present rank and winning the coveted silver cross badge of Marine Sharpshooter

During basic training, McLeod became well-versed in military subjects such as first aid, field hygiene and sanitation, field tactics and precision drill.

In addition to firing the Garand rifle, with which he qualified, he fired other Infantry weapons including the .45 calibre pistol, carbine, and Browning automatic rifle. He observed demonstration firing of the machine . gun. mortar, and flame thrower.

Private McLeod volunteered for enlistment in the Marine Corps in July, 1950.

Joseph Trudeau Enlists In AAF

Joseph Trudeau, son of Mr. and Mrs. Angelo Trudeau, 44 George street, enlisted in the Army Air Force and will leave Wednesday, November 29, for basic training at San Antonio, Texas.

Prior to his enlistment he was employed at the Needham Times and Bird and Son.

William Foley To Enter U. S. Army Air Force

William J Foley, 18, son of Mr and Mrs. James F Foley. 12 Howard street, recently enlisted in the Army Air Force He will report for duty on November, 27 at the U S Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Foley was graduated from St. Catherine’s Grammar School and Norwood High School. He is employed at the Western Auto Store, Washington street, Norwood.
