Reports On Marshalls
Mrs. Esther Deeb, Cedar Street, has had her first letter from her son, Fred, since he went overseas with his Marine outfit. In the letter, received this week, he reported on his participation in the Marshalls engagement and other island encounters with the Japanese.
He enclosed some Japanese paper money taken, he said, from a dead Japanese soldier.
At Camp Lejeune
Marine Pvt. Henry L Mulkern, Jr., 14 Prospect Avenue, Norwood, has been attached to an artillery battalion at Camp Lejeune, New River, N. C., as a student in the anti-aircraft school.
Graduation comes after a four-week course, which includes instruction in the operation and field maintenance of big guns, and actual firing of the weapons.
On Leave Here
Edward Barylak, fireman first class, is enjoying a nine-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Barylak of 49 Adams Street.
He has just completed four months of intensive schooling at Newport Naval Training Station. He attended electrician mate’s school.
After his leave, he will attend an advanced school in Brooklyn, New York. There he will receive instructions in the gyro compass.
