Ending months of vacancy and community pressure, the Board of Selectmen officially appointed George Thomas—head of the municipal employees association—as Norwood’s new full-time Veterans Agent last night.

Acting upon the recommendation of Town Manager John P. Mogan, Thomas steps into the role previously filled on an interim basis by Mogan following the resignation of former agent William Nolan. According to the 1972 Finance Commission report, the position carried a 1971 gross salary of $12,128.

Filling a Crucial Municipal Role

The appointment comes on the heels of a June report by Mogan indicating he had interviewed roughly 15 candidates for the post. Throughout the search, leaders from the town’s various veterans’ organizations lobbied aggressively for a swift, dedicated appointment, arguing that Mogan could not adequately balance the specialized needs of Norwood veterans alongside his heavy administrative duties as town manager.
