Two police sergeants and six patrolmen have taken the Civil Service examination for the position of lieutenant, it has been announced.
Notably, none of the newly appointed sergeants were among the examination group. Acting Lieutenant James Lydon, who holds a permanent rank of sergeant, and Sgt. Valentine Balutis, were present at the Junior High School last Tuesday morning for the exam.
Among the patrolmen taking the rigorous test were Richard Towne, Nicholas Connolly, Arthur Groh, Dermot O’Dea, William Spierdowis, and Joseph Flaherty. The promotional position was open to all sergeants and patrolmen in the department who have been employed in their respective grades for at least one year prior to the date of the examination.
Applicants must obtain at least a seventy-percent passing grade in each subject to become eligible for promotion. The lieutenant position carries an initial salary of $7,103.25 a year to start, with a maximum salary of $7,449.75. The Civil Service Board is expected to make known the official results of the test within the next sixty days.
