600 Well-Wishers Gather at King Philip Ballroom to Celebrate 30-Year Career of Dedicated Service
WRENTHAM — Retired School Superintendent Dr. Philip O. Coakley was honored by friends, family, and colleagues for his 18 years as superintendent of Norwood Public Schools at a testimonial banquet held at the King Philip Ballroom. Over 600 guests turned out to celebrate the 60-year-old administrator, marking the conclusion of a 30-year career in education that included 12 years as a teacher and 18 years as superintendent.
“I’ve had a great 18 years,” said Dr. Coakley, who read a summary of his career alongside his wife, Mary Coakley. “I was a teacher for 12 years, plus the 18 as superintendent. And I’ll tell you, it’s hard to leave something after 30 years.”
Toastmaster John J. Murphy, personnel director at Bird & Son, commended Dr. Coakley for guiding the district through an era of exploding student enrollment. Murphy highlighted the extensive school construction carried out during Coakley’s tenure, which included building both junior high schools and half of Norwood’s current elementary school facilities, as well as significantly strengthening the district’s science and language curricula. His successor, Dr. Louis J. Taris, now assumes leadership during an era marked by shifting demographics and declining enrollments.
State Commendations, Musical Tributes, and Scholarship Announcement
The evening featured presentations from local and state leaders:
- State Commendation: State Representative Gregory W. Sullivan presented Dr. Coakley with an official commendation from Governor Michael S. Dukakis.
- Board & Selectmen Tributes: Acting Selectmen Chairman Joseph F. Curran addressed the gathering, accompanied by musical selections played by a brass band led by Norwood High School Music Director Paul Alberta. The band performed “Wild Irish Rose,” “Hail to the Chief,” and a dedicated rendition of “I Did It My Way” for Dr. Coakley.
- Gifts & Presentations: Mary Deeb, president of the public school secretaries, presented Dr. Coakley with a framed picture of Norwood High School, from which he graduated 42 years earlier.
- Scholarship Fund: Organizers announced that teachers and administrators jointly funded an annual scholarship established in Dr. Coakley’s honor.
School Committee Chairwoman Rudith Berkowitz, who headed the organizing committee for the event, reflected on her 11-year working relationship with Coakley, describing it as one of deep mutual respect. “He is a man who truly cared about the education of every child in Norwood,” Berkowitz concluded.
