Education Takes Center Stage

On a busy Tuesday evening in town, the Norwood Chamber of Commerce gathered for its annual meeting to handle elections and celebrate local leadership. But the true highlight of the night was a historic milestone: for the first time in the Chamber’s 76-year existence, the business community chose to bestow its prestigious “Man of the Year” honor upon a local educator.

Dr. Philip O. Coakley, the Superintendent of Schools, was named the 1970 recipient for his profound “service to the community of Norwood.”

A Community-Wide Honor

Dr. Coakley, who had been with the Norwood school system since 1960 following an extensive career across all educational levels, was humble in his acceptance. Standing before a packed room of local business owners, school officials, and community leaders, he deflected the spotlight back to the town itself.

“I accept this award for all of Norwood,” Dr. Coakley stated, “for all that Norwood is as a result of its educational facilities.”

The magnitude of Dr. Coakley’s work in the local educational field drew praise from well beyond the town’s borders. To honor his accomplishments, superintendents from six neighboring school systems—Dedham, Canton, Medfield, Wellesley, Walpole, and Weymouth—made the trip to Norwood to personally offer their congratulations.

Outgoing Chamber President George T. Mahoney presented the award to Dr. Coakley before handing the reins over to the newly elected Chamber officers for the upcoming year:

• First Vice President: Thomas J. Manley
• Second Vice President: Irving R. Parsons
• Treasurers: Robert H. Cook and Arthur B. Rodgers
• Executive Board: Robert E. Adelson, George T. Mahoney, Richard P. Pennington, Philip H. Macchi, Louis H. Beigbeder, and Richard J. Small.

In another historic move, Arthur Wilson—a past president and dedicated Chamber secretary for 25 years—was officially named a life member of the Chamber, a title jokingly made “subject to renewal in the year 2000.”
