During a school committee meeting, Donna Glaser, 22, of 150 Devon Road was unanimously appointed as the new varsity cheerleading coach, succeeding Gail Calahan, who left to coach the New England Patriots cheerleaders.

School Committee Appoints Cheer Coach and Reviews Truant Officer Role

Miss Glaser, a speech therapist in Canton and Milton public schools, was recommended by the athletic director and endorsed in a letter from the cheerleaders. She was selected over two other candidates: Anna Murphy, 42, and Patricia McGuire, 20. The coaching position pays $930 for the fall and winter sports seasons. Committee members discussed safety precautions, with member Richard Joseph emphasizing that practices should be confined to afternoons and that academics must remain the top priority.

In other personnel matters, Superintendent Louis J. Taris reported that police juvenile officer Domenic J. Fruci does not wish to continue as truant officer. Fruci had temporarily filled the $2,500-a-year part-time post since January. Committee members praised Fruci’s effective, youth-centered approach, though debate arose between members Charles C. Saraca and Richard Joseph regarding whether a police officer should hold the truant officer position under a “one man, one job” standard. The committee is awaiting a Civil Service list of candidates.
