Civil Defense leaders across southeastern Massachusetts put their emergency readiness to the test last night, simulating a direct hit from a mock hurricane named Beaufort featuring terrifying 125 to 135 mph winds and torrential rainfall averaging nine inches an hour.

Participating in the regional drill alongside roughly 85 to 90 other towns, Norwood’s local defense apparatus faced a gauntlet of hypothetical crises designed to stress departmental coordination, including simulated car crashes, building fires, and widespread electricity blackouts.

Communication Hurdles in Norwood

While initial reports from regional Civil Defense Director John L. Lovering indicated that overall communications were largely successful across participating communities, local hiccups quickly surfaced.

In Norwood, radio communications interference with the regional Civil Defense headquarters in Bridgewater proved so severe that operators were forced to shut the radio off for an hour. Norwood Civil Defense Director Lee Griffin took the technical difficulties in stride, remarking with characteristic dry humor: “If nothing went wrong, I would know something was wrong.”

Officials noted that comprehensive evaluations detailing individual town problems and communication bottlenecks would take approximately two weeks to compile.

Preparing for New England’s Weather Extremes

Organizers stressed that the high-stakes exercise was far from an exercise in futility. Historically, New England averages a major destructive hurricane roughly every 15 years, with the last catastrophic storm hitting the region in 1955.

Once the simulation concluded, Norwood Civil Defense members packed up their gear—only to turn their attention toward preparing for the region’s next inevitable seasonal threat: a major New England snowstorm.
