Former Major League Outfielder and Record-Setting Chicago Cub Passes Away at 75

Martin F. Callaghan Sr., 75, of 6 Hoyle Street, a former National League baseball player, died yesterday at Pondville Hospital in Norfolk.
He was a lifelong resident of Norwood. Mr. Martin F. Callaghan Sr. had pitched for the Norwood High School baseball team and then joined the Eastern League and played ball for Worcester during the 1920-21 seasons. He batted three times in one inning while playing as an outfielder for the Chicago Cubs against Philadelphia in 1922 in the highest scoring game in the records — Chicago 26, Philadelphia, 23.
Mr. Martin F. Callaghan Sr. had played ball for 15 years, and among other teams, he played for the Cincinnati Reds. Following his athletic career, he worked as a press employe and was a retired employe of the Plimpton Press. Husband of the late Mrs. Mary A. Lovell Callaghan, he is survived by two sons, Martin F. Callaghan Jr. of Scituate and William J. Callaghan of Norwood; three sisters, Miss Mary C. Callaghan, Miss Helen G. Callaghan, and Mrs. Agnes Balfour, all of Norwood; a nephew, James D. Balfour of Norwood, and a grandchild, Caitlin Callaghan.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Catherine of Siena Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Visiting hours are from 7 to 9 tonight and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Gillooly Funeral Home, 126 Walpole Street. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Pondville Hospital Fund for Cancer, P.O. Box 111, Walpole, Mass.
