In a stellar display of pitching mastery, Harvard University’s All-Ivy League pitcher Bob Baxter emerged as the standout star of the New England American Legion Baseball Tournament. Hailing from Norwood, Massachusetts, Baxter delivered a dominant performance on the mound against a formidable Concord team, walking only one batter and registering a three-ball count on just two others despite not having pitched in over a week.
A Masterclass on the Mound
Concord coach Warren Doane, who had heard glowing scouting reports ahead of the matchup, was thoroughly impressed by Baxter’s control. “He was impressive,” Doane remarked, noting that Baxter consistently landed his first two pitches for strikes and kept hitters behind in the count. Doane went on to declare Baxter the single best pitcher his squad had faced all season.
Baxter himself expressed modest surprise at his own execution following the layoff, stating, “I wasn’t expecting to do this well.” The victory propelled Norwood further into a historic run at the tournament.
Historic State Record and Team Success
Norwood’s performance at the regional event marked the program’s third consecutive appearance, cementing a rare state record. Norwood joined an elite tier alongside American Legion posts from Portland, Maine, and New London, Connecticut, as the only teams making three straight trips to the tournament.
Meanwhile, top seed New London strategized by withholding their ace pitcher for an opening-round victory against White River Junction, Vermont, cruising to an 8-2 win and displaying the tactical depth of the competition.
A Defining Moment in Local Sports
Baxter’s exceptional outing remains a celebrated chapter in Norwood athletics, symbolizing the high caliber of local youth sports talent and community dedication. His dominance on the diamond in August 1987 continues to stand out as a proud milestone in regional sports history.
