The summer of 1984 had just begun to heat up in the quiet suburban town of Norwood, Massachusetts, when a sense of unease settled over the community. On July 11, 1984, the Junior High School South on Washington Street was targeted by a group of vandals who left behind a trail of destruction and chaos in their wake. The incident would ultimately lead to the arrest of two teenagers, who were charged with nighttime breaking and entering, malicious destruction of property, and larceny.

As reported by Patrolman Paul Bishop, the break-in at Junior High School South was a brazen act of vandalism that left the school’s administrators and staff reeling. The perpetrators smashed glass in interior doors, tore a bathroom sink off a wall, and engaged in “general ransacking” of the building, with most of the damage concentrated in the cafeteria kitchen area. The sheer extent of the destruction was a testament to the audacity and recklessness of the vandals.

The investigation into the break-in was led by Dets. Domenic Fruci, Michael J. Broyer, and Leslie LeBlanc, who worked tirelessly to gather evidence and identify the perpetrators. One crucial piece of evidence that emerged during the investigation was a set of footprints found around an abandoned safe on Atwood Avenue in Norwood. The footprints matched a footprint discovered at the school, providing a vital link between the crime scene and the suspects.

The safe itself had been recovered by police, containing a meager $5 and some checks. While the monetary value of the stolen items was relatively low, the sense of security and safety that had been compromised was immeasurable. The fact that the vandals could have potentially entered the building during the day, when it was open to the recreation department, and waited until nighttime to carry out their destructive acts only added to the sense of unease.

As the investigation continued, police expected to apprehend several more suspects in connection with the break-in. The involvement of multiple individuals suggested a level of organization and planning that was both disturbing and concerning. The community was left wondering how such a brazen act of vandalism could occur in their midst, and what measures could be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The arrest marked a significant turning point in the investigation, but it also highlighted the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the community at large.
