Smelstor, Angelo Star At Jammed Loring Rink
By FRANK WALL
The Norwood Sextet downed Dedham, 3-1 before a packed house at Loring Arena, Framingham, Saturday night with the scoreless Shiretown breaking a 3-0 shut-out in the last five seconds of play. Paul Angelo who said after the 38-0 grid bombing by Dedham this fall, “wait until the hockey season,” was first scorer for the locals with Richy Hebner drubbing in two insurance markers in the third period.Tom Smelstor, Norwood goalie, was brilliant in the Norwood net making 14 saves some on the impossible side and stopping Dedham’s high scorer Jim Prevett. Smelstor, somewhat of a goat in the Walpole loss, came back with a great effort, as time and time again he robbed the Dedham forwards with clutch saves.
For Norwood, high scorer Richy Hebner held in check the first two periods rammed home two in the third frame to give Norwood a 3-0 lead and a safe margin. With 5 seconds left.
Joe Mazzeferro scored for Dedham to break the shutout. It was a real ’rock and sock-em’ game with 9 penalties called; 6 in the wild third period that saw tempers Hare up two or three times.
Frank Clark, Dedham goalie, played a fine game coming up with 18 saves and in the first period alone. He came up with 10 as Norwood threatened to skate Dedham off the ice. Paul Angelo, the only football player on the local squad, played his heart out with some great back-checking. His first goal was a beauty as he stole the puck from behind the net and banged it home for the big lead. Paul also chipped in with 2 assists.
The Norwood defense was really solid as Tim Twomey and Bob Clifford stopped countless Dedham attempts. Clifford who is only a junior was an old pro out there with some great checking and clearing passes. John McNeil played defense also and chipped in with a valuable assist.
The Norwood second line, Bobby Donahue, Bill Hasen-fus and Bill Crowley was used mainly as a defensive unit and performed well. Donahue had a clean break in the first frame missing in close.
Dedham’s Jim Prevett played a fine forward game, but Norwood just had a little too much and Smelstor slammed the door.
Norwood now has a record of 2 wins and 1 loss and will be tough from here on in. They now tackle Framingham North next Saturday at 3:30 at the same Framingham rink.
GAME RESUME
Both teams came on the ice to a loud roar. Norwood started their same six with Smelstor in the goal and Twomey and Clifford on defense and the front wave of Capt. Maus Hebner and Angelo. Norwood immediately took charge as Twomey fired a hard one but Clark saved.
Richy Hebner started a rush but was hooked from behind by Prevett with only 40 seconds gone and Norwood had a one-man advantage.
Norwood put on an attack but Clarke saved on Twomey, Hebner and Angelo. Prevett broke out but Timmy rocked him and Bob Clifford cleared. Joe Mazzeferro had a golden chance, and Smelstor kicked it out.

Norwood second line of Billy Crowley, Bob Donahue and Bill Hassenfus held their own with Bill firing a hard one from midice that was stopped. At 3.14 Crowley went to the brig and Dedham had a one-man advantage, Jim Prevett tried a rush but Clifford broke him up and cleared and just as Crowley was coming out of the box Paul Angelo hustled the puck from behind the net and carried it out front to hit the upper left-hand corner for a big 1-0 lead. The rest of the period saw Norwood continue to keep the puck in the Dedham zone with Hebner, Maus and Angelo all getting shots but Clark pushing them aside. Norwood second line did some fancy work as they held Dedham’s first wave in check and just as the period ended
Bobby Donahue stole the puck at mid-ice and coasted in all alone on Clarke. He just lost the puck at the goal and Clark saved as the first period ended with Norwood in command 1-0. Clifford was outstanding on defense for Norwood.
The shots were 9-3 in favor of Norwood.
The second period saw no scoring but the action was plentiful. Norwood coach Don Wheeler started his second wave as a defensive measure against the Dedham first wave. But Dedham made a quick switch and changed lines. Billy Crowley drew first blood as he fired a close miss from the face-off. Twomey broke up Prevett and cleared, and the Maus, Hebner, Angelo line combined with some fancy passing to clear Dedham defenseman Paul Crump.
Things got a little rough as Hampe decked Hebner and went to the brig at 3.42, but five seconds later he was joined by Twomey of Norwood.
The game was pretty even the first of the period with Smelstor making a clutch save on Prevett and Hebner and Maus just missing on a nice pass play. Just before the period ended Crowley went off and Norwood held Angelo hustling to clear the puck.
The third period saw plenty of action as six penalties were called in a real rough segment. Dedham started fast as Prevett and Roach were robbed by Smelstor in a big scramble Tom dove on the puck smothering the Dedham attack. At 2.25 Norwood broke the ice as Paul Angelo fed across to Maus and Blane put the puck right on Hebner’s stick and Richy let go a backhander that caught the lower right corner of the net giving Norwood a big 2-0 lead.
Things really got rough then as the players seemed to sense the pressure. In the space of three minutes five penalties were called with the checks really flying as the fans roared. At the seven minute mark, and with both teams at full strength again, Prevett sailed in all alone on Smelstor but Tom gloved it for a neat save.
Norwood then put the game out of reach as Paul Angelo passed to John McNeil who took a shot. With two players draped all over him as he was falling to the ice, Hebner swiped at the puck and it ended up in the Dedham net on a great show of determination.
The goal came at 8.19. The only question now was by how much and if a shutout could be attained.
With five seconds left Joi Masseferro scored from in close. The final score, Norwood 3, Dedham 1.
