Norwood’s Social Highlights from the Home Front and Beyond

💒 Weddings

  • Miss Eleanor Duffy & Sgt. James “Jimmy” Carlin
A charming ceremony was held Saturday afternoon at St. Catherine’s Church, where Miss Eleanor Duffy of Nichols Street wed Sgt. James Carlin, recently returned from service in Italy. The bride wore ivory satin with lace trim and carried a bouquet of white roses and blue forget-me-nots. Sgt. Carlin’s best man was his brother, Edward, home on leave from the Navy. A reception followed at the Norwood Elks Hall, with dancing until midnight.
  • Helen Matola & Lt. Robert “Bobby” Greene
The Matola-Greene wedding took place in a quiet garden ceremony behind the bride’s family home on Vernon Street. Lt. Greene, a pilot with the 8th Air Force, wore his dress blues. Guests included several members of the Norwood VFW and Helen’s coworkers from the telephone exchange. The couple will reside in Dayton, Ohio, where Lt. Greene is stationed.

🥂 Reunions

  • Lee Family Homecoming
Major William Lee, recently returned from Europe, was honored at a family reunion hosted by his sister Margaret at their Day Street home. Over 40 relatives gathered for a backyard cookout, with homemade pies, fresh corn, and a surprise performance by cousin Frankie on accordion. Neighbors stopped by to offer congratulations and share stories from the corner butcher shop.
  • Ahola Crew Reunion
Members of Sgt. Edwin Ahola’s ground crew reunited at Norwood Memorial Park to mark the anniversary of their final mission. The men shared wartime photos, toasted with root beer, and posed beside a replica B-24 nose art banner. “We kept ’em flying,” said Ahola, “and we’re still flying high.”

📰 Social Notes
