Police Deliver Twin Girls, Premature, But Both OK-This Day In Norwood History-March 4, 1963

NORWOOD — Two Norwood police officers delivered a young mother of her first born — twin girls six to eight weeks premature — under difficult circumstances early today. The pair proved in most convincing fashion that they were paying attention when a Norwood doctor lectured the force about how to behave in just such emergencies more than two years ago.

The mother, Mrs. Robert Wold, 21, 51 Cranmore st., is recovering nicely in Norwood Hospital. Her infant daughters, 1 1/2 and 3 1/2 pounds respectively, are in incubators, and their condition is described as “fair to good.”

Patrolmen Nicholas DeStito, 37, 9 Glendale Rd. and James W. Kelly, 37, 120 Jefferson Drive, are taking some good-natured banter from their friends and accepting the congratulations of the Norwood medical fraternity.

The 23-year-old father of the twins called Norwood police at 3 this morning. Sgt Williams Travers took the call. He had some difficulty understanding the distraught father but sent DeStito and Kelly on their way.

DeStito and Kelly quickly learned that their arrival was barely ahead of that of baby No. 1. They raked their memories for the important little details of that film lecture course they had attended 24 years ago. (Dr. Harry Brennan, the Norwood Hospital pediatrician, was the lecturer; now counts DeStito and Kelly the brightest pupils he ever had.)

They called for an ambulance and fireman Malachi Kelleher wasn’t long in showing up with one.

Kelly rode in back with Mrs. Wold. DeStito followed them in the police cruiser.

The two-mile trip to the hospital was barely underway when Kelly knew that a second baby was on its way. He urged Malachi to hurry.

The second baby and the ambulance reached the hospital parking lot neck and neck. DeStito climbed into the ambulance and helped his buddy deliver the second infant.
