The youngsters of South Norwood will soon be offered again the use of Hawes Brook Swimming Pool if plans instituted this week by Town Manager Francis Smith materialize as anticipated.
Mr. Smith told the Board of Selectmen Tuesday night that he had contacted the State Department of Health relative to the advisability of using the Brook this year for swimming and that they had asked if the condition that caused the pollution had been cleared and if the sides and bottom of the brook had cleared itself of all signs of previous pollution They were told that in his opinion everything was all right.
Mr. Wright of the State Department of Health advised that he would send an engineer to take samples of water from the brook and would check the sides and bottom of the brook and look over the pool itself and advise on means of chlorination This engineer was expected yesterday.
When the pool has been cleaned and sand placed on the bottom, it is intended to use some of the hypochlorites from the Westwood Pumping Station and thoroughly clear the pool before using it. During the summer it will be chlorinated from time to time.
The bathing house plumbing has been repaired and renewed, the position of the diving board has been changed in accordance with a very good suggestion from Mr Slaney and it is planned to build an elevated chair for the lifeguard on duty, Mr. Smith stated.
