A three-alarm fire ripped through a building in Norwood on Wednesday night.

Flames destroyed the vacant building at 50 Davis Avenue, where fire crews remained Thursday morning dousing hot spots.

The building, where soap was once made, has been vacant for about 15 years.

When firefighters arrived they say the flames were so intense it was not safe to go inside. Officials said firefighters heard noises they believed were explosions inside.

The fire is the third fire in the area in three months.

“We had a fire in this building back in April on a Sunday morning,” Chief Anthony Greeley said. “We had an outside fire that involved vehicles on the far side of this building less than 10 days ago.”

State investigators brought a dog that smells for accelerants such as gasoline. The town arson investigator talking to people who work nearby.

Officials said it is possible that homeless people had gained access to the building.

Getting enough water on the fast-moving fire was difficult, and the chief said crews were also concerned the flames could spread to buildings on either side.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
