Starting on or about September 15, the United States postal service will inaugurate an airmail service at the Norwood Airport which will link this community directly with worldwide air mail facilities via planes of the E W. Wiggins Airways.
Announcement of the new service was made by Postmaster Fred Adelmann yesterday as plans were being made for high-ranking postal officials to be present for the initial run.
With the opening of the service still over three weeks away, philatelists are already flooding the Norwood Post Office with mail for the first flight. A special cachet to commemorate the day is to be supplied the local office by the postal department, and all air mail on hand for the initial run will be suitably marked for posterity.
The postal officials have set up four segment routes between Springfield, Hartford, Conn., and Willimantic. Conn., Providence, Boston, and Norwood. Plans are being formutated to increase the service to take in the cities of Taunton and Brockton at a later date.
Wiggins Airways already has been approved for regular scheduled airline service and has a fleet of twin-engine Cessnas ready for the opening of the service this Fall.
