The Norwood AH Stars split two games with Holliston last week as they topped Holliston 6-4 at Flagg Field, Holliston on Wednesday, and then dropped an 8-inning contest 3-2 at Pleasant Field Norwood Sunday afternoon.
At Flagg Field it was a combination of great relief pitching by Al Campbell and the slugging of Gerry McDermot.
The home team took a 1-0 lead in the first as Kampersai doubled in Frazier. Norwood erupted for 5 in the second on three hits as they took what looked like a commanding lead. Big hits in the inning were a two run single by Al Campbell and run scoring singles by Steve Costello and Gerry McDermot. For a while it looked like Norwood would go on to route the Holliston nine but this was not the case as fireball pitcher Ken Brewer came in and held Norwood to three hits the rest of the way, two by McDermot and one by Letts.
The home team rallied for 3 runs in their half of the second and had the go ahead runs on base when Al Campbell was called on the scene. Al promptly closed the gate. He k’d two men with the bases jammed and shut.out Holliston the rest of the way on one hit. Norwood added an insurance run in the 5th as Eddie Letts singled in Gerry Mc-Trernan.
Holliston had a chance in the 6th but Norwood 2nd sacker Joe Jenkins speared a hard ground ball and tagged the runner going to second and flipped to first for ‘ a great game ending double play
McDermot paced the Norwood attack with a single, double and triple.
HOLLISTON 3—NORWOOD 2
Holliston evened the series with the Norwood stars as they topped the Locals in an eight-inning contest at Pleasant Field Sunday.
Pete Tamulonis pitched good ball for the Locals and has a 2-0 lead but the visitors tied it up in the 6th and scored an unearned run off Steve Fischer in the 7th to tie the contest and win in the 8th on an overthrow. It was the same story as Brewer scattered five Norwood hits.
Norwood scored their only runs in the 4th as Fischer singled, stole second, and scored on Al Campbell’s double. Campbell stole 3rd and scored on a wild pitch giving Norwood a temporary 2-0 lead. Tamulonis was sailing along with a shutout for six innings but the teams were scheduled for seven.
The big hitters for Holliston were Cole, Campersal, and Brewer. Norwood gave it a great try in the 8th but couldn’t put across the tieing counter.
With Gerry McTernan on second Steve Fischer was intentionally passed and both runners moved up on a passed ball.
Jim Symington then popped to 2nd to end the contest. Gerry McTernan, Norwood shortstop, made the play of the tourney with a great back-handed stab and throw in the 3rd.
The team« eagerly await the final game of the 2 out 3 set at Holliston tonight.
