MARY COLBURN WHEELOCK

Mrs. Mary Colburn, wife of Elijah Wheelock, died last Sunday morning at her home on Maple Street. She was born in West Dedham Nov. 9, 1818, and was the last of the fifteen children of the late Isaac Colburn. She was one of three by his second wife. Dana P. Colburn, the teacher, and mathematician, was her own brother. The late Mrs. Cole and Mrs. Everett of Dedham were twin half-sisters. Mr. Isaac Colburn of Dedham is the fourth Isaac in the family.
Mrs. Wheelock had a bright, active mind, and in her younger days was a successful school-teacher, teaching in West Dedham, Dorchester, Boxboroand South Dedham, and some of her pupils are living in Norwood, and have been her neighbors for years.
Forty-nine years ago she was married to Elijah Wheelock, who was then a workman in West Dedham, where they lived for a few years. They lived six years in Providence, R. I., when in 1800 Mr. Wheelock sold his business and moved to South Dedham, engaging in the grocery and dry goods business in Mie store on the corner of Washington and Cottage streets.
Mr. Wheelock, now in his 83rd year, and five children survive her. Mrs. Wheelock possessed an active mind, was a friend of education and religion, a good member of society, a kind neighbor, a devoted wife and mother, making her home cheerful and pleasant to her family and friends. Owing to Mr. Wheelock’s ill health the funeral on Tuesday was private, Rev. George Hill attending It. The remains were placed in the tomb in the West Dedham cemetery.
