Buses rolled out of Norwood at 7:45 a. m. Saturday morning, August 3, headed south into Clifton, New Jersey and arriving about 2:00 p. m. at the American Legion Post No. 347 where a repast of franks and sauerkraut was served. After a short rest they went on to Clifton High School Field (home of the fighting mustangs) for sharpening up the routine. The group looked good to everyone in the stadium at contest time as evident by the generous applause.
The praises of the Jerseyites lifted the hopes of the Debonnaires. The big disappointment was the withdrawal of the Audubon girls (the other all girl corps) from the contest.
Although the Debonnaires placed sixth in a field of eight corps, it was the first time a Massachusetts drum corps placed anywhere but last in the Jersey Contest.
The girls arrived back in Norwood Sunday at 5:00 a. m. in order to get to church and to rest up for their trip to Peabody for a contest that same night.
The Debonnaires are considered the best all girls Drum and Bugle Corps in the East.
