Nitroglycerine can cause a great deal of devastating damage Evidently, the new Norwood semi-pro baseball club aspired for small explosions on the diamond when it adopted the nickname, the “Nitros,” at the fund raising dance last Friday evening at the Sportsmen’s Club.
Marty Brennan, of 101 Beechnut Road, Westwood, chose the moniker and received a pair of tickets to the September 10 meeting of the Red Sox and Tigers in Boston Stan Lukis, coach of the Nitros, presented the tickets Sunday evening to the Stonehill College senior.
Other Interesting names were submitted, notably, the Cyclones, Jets, Gems, Industrials, Redlegs, Batmen, and Cinderellas. But Brennan’s offering was ultimately chosen. Perhaps, its greatest appeal is its originality. And it fits the latest playing style of the team, a high-scoring, hard-hitting ensemble.
Arlene Connolly, of 43 Jacobsen Drive, and Judith Howard, of 200 Nichols Street, Norwood, also received guest tickets for Red Sox games in a drawing of ticket stubs of the young people who attended the dance.
Mike Rizzo and his Orchestra. and Dave Curley and Johnny Noonan entertained the crowd The “Who’s on First” skit during intermission was well received.
The Nitros are grateful to Al Nevickas, “Winnie” Ec-hardt, and “Butch” Thompson of the Norwood Sportsmen’s Club for their help in making the dance successful. And also, Connie Murphy and Peter Stupak deserve thanks for their assistance.
