St. Catherine’s CYO hockey team pulled the division title out of the hat Saturday at EC’s McHugh Forum. With the goalie out of the net, Art Conley tipped in a long shot by Jim Dooley to give Norwood a 2-2 tie with St. Mary’s of Hull, which clinched for St. Catherine’s the Southern Division crown.
The game gave Norwood a record of seven wins and two ties for the season and left the team undefeated in two years of league play. There is one game left on the schedule with St. Theresa’s of West Roxbury next Sunday morning, but this will just be a tuneup for the Lennonmen, who will open the defense of the State CYO title on Sunday, February 14, against team four of the Eastern Division. In the round-robin playoffs which start the 14th, the top four teams from each division will meet, with the two winners playing for the title on Sunday, February 28th.
The Hull game was a real close encounter, with Norwood trailing 2-1 with less than a minute left in the game. Norwood mentor Jim Lennon pulled his goalie, Danny Moloney, in an effort to tie the game and give the Saints the title. Jimmy Dooley got the puck at the Blue Line and fired a blazer that Art Conley tipped into the corner for the tie and the championship in the Southern Division.
Russ Tobin had started the scoring for Norwood in the second period after a scoreless first period when he let go a hard slap shot from the blue line that caromed off a Hull player into the net at 7-09. Just 30 seconds later, Andy Ferriter tied it up for Hull with a shot that found the right-hand corner of the Norwood cage Bill Carfagna put Hull ahead at the 7-minute mark of the third period, setting the stage for the Norwood comeback. Dan Moloney had a hot day in the nets for Norwood as he came up with 25 saves, compared to 17 for Mike Cannon in the Hull net.
