Sputnik Nein Kaputnik Yet

For a hectic few minutes last night, Greater Boston Interest In the Soviet moon centered In Norwood.

About 7 p.m. someone triggered a rumor that Sputnik had crashed In Page’s Field near Prospect and Washington streets. Telephone wires buzzed as excited Individuals called police and fire headquarters, newspaper offices, telephone operators, and even each other. Boston newspapers were calling Norwood and vice versa.

“Scoop” McLean, Free Press photographer, was among the first on the scene at the reported location of Sputnik’s untimely demise, ready to get on-the-spot pictures that would spread Norwood’s fame to every village of the world.

There was a moon, to be sure, but it was the same old one we’re accustomed to. And the man in it seemed to have an extra wry grin.
