Machinist Mate First Class Percy Henry LeGay. Jr

The Navy Department has officially notified Mrs. Helena LeGay of 428 Prospect Street that her husband. Machinist Mate First Class Percy LeGay. Jr. who has been listed as missing in action since October 26, 1944 was killed in action on that date.

LeGay was serving on a destroyer, the USS Johnston, engaged in a three-day battle off Leyte when he met his death.

LeGay enlisted in the Navy in January, 1942, and received his boot training at Newport, R.I. From there he was sent to Wentworth Institute in Boston and upon graduating as an honor student was sent to New York for further training.

He went from New York to the West coast and was assigned to the U.S.S. Johnston which had not then been commissioned. He served in the South Pacific area for nine months.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Percy LeGay Sr., of 216 Stone Street, he was married to the former Helena Walsh of Norwood. His wife and their five-year-old daughter, Evelyn, live with Mrs. LcGay’s parents. Mr. and Mrs Edward Walsh of Prospect Street.

A solemn pro-funeral mass will be sung Saturday morning at 8 o’clock at St. Catherine’s Church.
