Norwood’s Civic Spirit and Community Pride (1898–1964) From military service to musical heritage, Norwood’s story is one of dedication and resilience. In 1898, local men joined the Spanish-American War, and by 1918, the town mourned its first WWI casualty. A 1921 prank involving fake detour signs brought laughter and fines, while 1938 saw merchants challenge town leadership. Former Fire Chief Boyden, at 94 in 1948, found joy in gardening. In 1949, Norwood celebrated young athletes’ undefeated season, added a safety fence to Hawes Pool, and saw Ambrose Kelly aim to install 500 TVs. The crowning civic tribute came in 1964 with the Walter F. Tilton Memorial Carillon, making Town Hall a rare musical landmark.
