Samuel D. Dean.
Norwood lost one of its old businessmen last Sunday morning when Samuel D. Dean of 49 Cottage Street, quietly crossed over the bar. For two and one half years, Mr. Dean had been failing in health and had been confined to his home a large part of the time by a paralytic disease. About two weeks ago, however, he suddenly got worse and from that time until his death Sunday morning, he knew nothing of what was going on around him. The end came quietly and apparently without a struggle.
Mr. Dean was 71 years old and was a watch maker by profession. He was for many years connected with William Pond & Son, English watch and chronometer makers and also with Palmer & Batchelder of Boston. He was considered one of the best in his profession.
About 28 years ago he married Georgianna F. Carpenter of Boston, who survives him, and moved to Norwood. This was his second marriage, he having had two children by his first wife. They are Mrs. W. J. Ellis of Achron, Ohio, and Frank F. Dean of Norwood. No children came through his second marriage. In 1884, he opened a jewelry store at 652 Washington street, Norwood, and was an active man until about two and one half years ago, when he underwent a paralytic shock. Since then his wife has managed his store, he having been there only at odd intervals.
He leaves besides a wife, a son and a daughter, one sister, Mrs. Isaiah Merrifield, and two grandsons, Earl V. and Harold D. Ellis of Achron, Ohio.
Funeral services were held at his home at 49 Cottage Street, Tuesday afternoon, Rev. W. B. Eddy, his former pastor, officiating. At the end of the service at the house, the body was taken to the chapel at Highland Cemetery, where the Odd Fellows held their services. Interment was at Highland cemetery.
