Norwood Sextet Shuts Out Milton, 2-0, For 7th In Row

The Norwood High School hockey team, minus the services of top scorers Capt. Blaine Maus and Richy Hebner, blanked Milton, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at the Loring rink in Framingham before a large crowd that turned out to witness the games which had Norwood and Walpole on the same card.
Scoring the goals for the Wheelermen were Paul Angelo and Bill Crowley, as Tom Smelstor, the Norwood goalie, chalked up his sixth straight shutout

Norwood now has a record of seven wins and one loss and are tied with Walpole in the standings in total points, but Walpole is undefeated and has one game in hand Norwood faces Wellesley this Saturday night at the same Loring Rink with faceoff time at 7-30.

In this game Norwood mentor Don Wheeler had to revamp his line without Ham and Hebner, The first wave was Billy Crowley centering for Bob Donahue and Bill Hasenfus, and in the second line it was regular first liner Paul Angelo pairing with JV stars Bob Stewart and Bob Folan.

The Norwood goals were scored by Paul Angelo in the first period on an unassisted tally at 3 29 and in the second period Billy Crowley wrapped things up as he scored from in close with assists going to Bill Hasenfus and Bob Clifford.

Tom Smelstor had somewhat of an easy afternoon in the nets for Norwood as he was called on to make only five saves. Bruce Thompson had a good afternoon in the Milton net, coming up witn 30 saves. The Norwood team was stricken by the flu. In addition to Hebner and Maus being out, first-liners Bobby Donahue and Bill Hasenfus played but were weak as they both were trying to shake the bug.

As usual Tim Twomey played an outstanding game on defense and made some nice rushes, as did co-pointman Bobby Clifford. Twomey and Clifford are undoubtly the best defensive combination in the league.

Paul Angelo, playing without his top two linemates, was easily the best forward on the ice as he really put on a show in the third period with some great stickhandling.

GAME RESUME

The fans were witnessing a different starting Norwood lineup as Bill Crowley was centering for Bob Donahue and Bill Hasenfus. The Norwood first wave quickly brought the puck into the Milton’s Joe Marshall made a to Crowley just missed Miltons Joe Marshall made a rush but Twomey bowled him over at the blue line The Norwood second wave of Paul Angelo, Bob Folan and Bobbie Stewart came on quickly to put on the pressure. Bob Folan took a long shot but Thompson saved. Bob Stewart fed Angelo but again the Milton goalie kicked it out. Norwood broke the ice at 3:24 as Paul Angelo picked up a loose puck at the Milton blue line and stickhandled in all alone and put the puck into the upper lefthand corner of the net and Norwood had a 1-0 lead.

Bill Crowley made a nice rush and almost scored but he slid into the cage with the puck. Donahue hit Crowley with a neat pass but Thompson saved and also kicked out Hasenfus’s rebound Milton received a penalty at 5 50 and Norwood put on a press with Twomey making a couple of length-of-the-ice rushes, but he was stopped in close Bob Clifford, who is improving with every game, took a loose puck and sailed in all alone but Thompson saved and the hustling Norwood forward Bob Donahue, picked up the rebound and hit the post as the first period ended with Norwood in charge 1-0. Smelstor had only one save in the period to 13 for Bruce Thompson in the Milton end.

In the second period, Norwood again quickly applied the pressure as the first wave of Donahue, Crowley and Hasenfus was all around the net but couldn’t put the plug in. Bob Stewart, and Bob Folan put on a pretty pass pattern and Angie scored from in close, but the goal was called back due to a player in the crease Tim Twomey then decked Byron at the blue line and rushed through the Milton team and dropped a pass for Bobby Donahue, but Bob’s shot just missed the corner. Angelo, Stewart and Folan were in a scramble in front of Thompson but he cleared. At 7 37 Clifford went to the brig and as Bobbie came on he picked up a loose puck at the blue line that Thompson saved. Bill Hasenfus picked up the rebound and fed it across the cage to Billy Crowley who tucked It into the Milton cage and Norwood had a 2-0 lead as the second period ended Smelstor had two saves in the Norwood net to 12 for Thompson at the other end.

The third period saw no scoring as Norwood kept the puck in the Milton zone throughout. Pete Oberländer and Jack Cronin saw action as Coach Wheeler gave the youngsters some experience. The best rush of the period was a length-of-the-ice solo by Paul Angelo, who put on a real show in the period with some flashy stickhandling. The game ended with Norwood in command 2-0 and eagerly awaiting the big test at the hands of Wellesley Saturday.
