A late third-period goal by Tom Shea, his second of the game, carried Norwood to a 4-3 victory over previously undefeated Marblehead in quarterfinal action in the 25th annual State Hockey tournament Thursday night at the Garden.

In the other quarterfinal match played before 8092 little sophomore Bob Reardon scored four goals as Maiden Catholic belted Newton, 6-2.

The Norwood-Marblehead game was a penalty-filled battle that had its ups and downs for both teams. Norwood, the second-place finisher in the Bay State League, appeared on its way to an easy victory as it built up a three-goal lead early in the second period.

But high-scoring Toot Cahoon personally carried Marblehead on his back to tie the game. Cahoon scored all three goals for the North Shore League champions with one of the finest individual efforts of the season. Marblehead picked up momentum as Cahoon went on his scoring spree but Norwood battled back to move into the semifinal round.

Norwood scored at 3:40 of the first period on a 15-foot drive by Dick Graham. Twenty-two seconds later Shea gave his club a two-goal lead. The big junior walked in to jam home a rebound home from in closed. Starting the second period Dennis Hebner, who has scored in every tournament game, tallied at the 1:41 mark and it looked like Norwood was home free. Cahoon scored a pair of identical goals before the end of the session.

On two occasions he broke in off the left wing to beat Neil Higgins with 25-foot drives to the far corner.

Early in the third period Cahoon was parked in front of the Norwood net to tip Bob Blood’s blue line drive by Higgins. Shea scored the winning goal with a slapshot from 20 feet out. He was in the center area to intercept a clearing pass by a Marblehead defender. Norwood was hit for 12 of the 19 penalties whistled in the game.

Marblehead’s failure to advance can be attributed to its power play” failure. The power play worked only once while on three oc casions the Headers enjoyed a two-man advantage but couldn’t beat Higgins. Maiden Catholic had too much offense for Newton. The North Shore League representative opened up a two-goal lead in the first period and, like Norwood, appeared on the way to an easy win.
