What police believe might have been an attempt to burglarize the Norwood Office of the Union Savings Bank at Guild Square was nipped in the bud last Wednesday night by an alert Norwood patrolman.

It was shortly after 10:00 p.m. when Patrolman James Michienzie, tried a rear basement door and the door fell from its hinges to the ground.

Entering the bank basement, Patrolman Michienzie saw nothing amiss. Taking no chances, he shook another inside door to sound an alarm at the Norwood police station.

Lt. James Murphy and Patrolmen John Wall, Francis Riley, James Curran, and James Thomas responded in two cruiser cars and within seconds the bank was surrounded.

Police scoured the basement of the bank building and then Francis McQuaid, the bank manager was notified at his home and rushed to the bank.

He opened doors to allow the police to enter the bank foyer and an extensive search of the entire bank was undertaken.

On checking the rear basement door, police found that the screws had been removed from the three hinges of the door and also that the pins had been removed.

Lt. Murphy, after examining the door, called upon the State Police for a fingerprint man to come to the bank. Sergeant Arthur Morrissey responded and took photographs and fingerprints at the scene.

The door was secured and the bank given a final check before the departure of the police and Mr. McQuaid.
