Finish Training Al Parris Island
Joseph T. Crowe and Vincent J. Lee Jr, both of Norwood, recently completed their recruit training at Parris Island, S.C., the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, and were promoted to Private First Class and won the silver badge of Marine marksman.
Crowe is the son of Thomas Crowe of 12 Warren Street, while Lee’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Vincent J. Lee of 38 Fairview Road.
During basic training, they became well versed in many military subjects and field tactics.
Sgt. Donlan Decorated For Heroism In Korea
WASHINGTON, D. C. — Marine Staff Sgt. James T. Donlan, son of Francis Edward Donlan, 81 Railroad avenue, Norwood, Mass., was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement while serving with the 1st Marine Division in Korea.
The citation follows:
“In the name of the President of the United States, the Commanding General, 1st Marine Division, takes pleasure in awarding the BRONZE STAR MEDAL to Staff Sergeant James T. Donlan, United States Marine Corps Reserve for service as set forth in the following Citation.
“For heroic achievement in connection with operations against the enemy while serving with a Marine infantry regiment in KOREA on 10 July 1952.
Staff Sergeant DONLAN, serving as tank commander on patrol, displayed outstanding courage, leadership and skill in the performance of his duties. Ordered forward to assist in retrieving two disabled tanks and one disabled recovery vehicle, under intense enemy mortar, artillery and machine gun fire which
the retrieving party was brought killed one tanker and wounded five others. With no regard for his personal safety, Staff
Sergeant DONLAN dismounted from his tank and exposed himself to the accurate and effective enemy fire to assist in the evacuation of the dead and wounded Staff
Sergeant DONLAN’S selfless devotion to duty and resourcefulness were a source of inspiration to all who observed him His heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”
“Stall Sergeant DONLAN is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.
Cpl. Carchedi Coming Home From Germany
WITH THE 1ST INFANTRY DIV. IN GERMANY
Cpl. Domenic A. Carchedi, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francesco Carchedi, 22 Lenox ave., Norwood, is returning to the U S. after 17 months with the Ist Infantry Division.
Stationed in the southern part of Germany, this outfit is undergoing constant field training as part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Army
Corporal Carchedi was assigned as clerk-typist in division headquarters.
He entered the Army in April 1951 and was stationed at Camp Breckinridge, Ky., before his assignment in Germany.
The corporal graduated from Norwood Senior High School in 1947 and was later employed by the J .S. Cushing Co.
Pfc. Greenwood Gels Japan Leave From Korea Duty
WITH THE 2ND INFANTRY DIV. IN KOREA
Pfc. Joseph F. Greenwood, son of Mr. and Mrs. Levi J Greenwood, 25 High Street. Norwood, recently spent five days in Japan on a rest and recuperation leave from the 2d Infantry Division in Korea.
The vacation was part of the Army’s policy of giving periodic rests to soldiers in the combat zone. Luxurious “R and R” hotels are located throughout Japan to accommodate the veterans.
Greenwood, a computer in the 37th Field Artillery Battalion, entered the Army in February 1952 and arrived overseas in July 1952.
He is a graduate of Cathedral High School, and was employed as a truck driver by R. Barrett in Norwood.
