Sophomore Norwood Hurler Fans Nine In Mound Debut

Sophomore pitcher Paul Murphy hurled a smart 5-. hitter as his teammates pounded out 14 hits which enabled the Norwood High squad to easily defeat Wellesley High, 9-2 last Monday afternoon at the Civic Field in Norwood.
Gerry Cloherty started off for Norwood with a double to center field. Kev Dixon singled to left which sent Cloherty in with the first run of the afternoon.
In the last of the second, Pete Dixon lofted a high fly which rode with the briskly blowing wind and fell fair about two feet inside the third base line.
Dixon went to second on a wild pitch by Wellesley moundsman Bob Linton Bob Armour then placed a single into left and Dixon raced around with the second tally. Don McKenna singled to right. Armour tried to make third and first baseman Rocky Edwards made a wild throw which enabled Armour to score the third run of the game. Gerry Cloherty then belted his second two-bagger of the afternoon, driving McKenna home with the fourth run. Tony Grinavic grounded out, sending
Cloherty to third. Slx foot, six-inch Kev Dixon then lashed a sharp single which drove In Cloherty Norwood held a 5-0 lead after the side was retired in this second inning.
The rampaging Norwoodites made the count 6-0 in the third Inning as Ed Feeney blasted a triple to deep left. The fleetfooted Feeney crossed the plate after Bob Armour had singled to left.
The Seafatimen held a commanding 7-0 lead after the third frame had ended.
Six-foot, five-inch John Fleming took over the mound chores for Wellesley in the bottom of the fourth. The fireballing southpaw looked very effective as he struck out five Norwood batters in the two innings that he worked.
Murphy had allowed only two safeties in the first five innings. He walked four but fanned six.

His baseball experience dates back several years Jack played playground bail for six season’s mostly as a shortstop. He felt that he would have a better chance if he changed to the outfield, where he could put his good throwing arm to better use.
MacLellan played on the Junior Legion team for two years. He also participated in Twi-Light league games. He is now in his second season on the Varsity squad at Norwood High.
The 5’6” lad likes to bowl in his spare time. His high game in bowling was a stratospheric 141 Jack claims that bowling helps keep him in good physical condition during the off-season.
“Mac” likes baseball because it is a clean sport and full of competition 1 Its favorite player is Jimmy Piersall of he Red Sox. Jack admires lus courage and determination.
Jack is very active in school affairs. He is Vice-President of the Senior Class and a member of the Student Council “Mac” is also on the Yearbook Committee. He has been on the Honor Roll every term since entering Norwood High.
The 18-year-old flychaser plans to go to Northeastern University next Fall. He hopes to be an engineer.
The last half of the game was more or less a pitcher’s duel. Fleming was eight runs down, but hurling very effectively Fleming allowed six hits in the five innings that he pitched. He struck out nine men, walked only four.
Wellesley did all of their scoring In the sixth. Brad Cliff was hit by a pitch and went to first base. Al Bishop then lashed a tremendous triple to very deep right-center and Cliff scored easily. Bishop scored their second run on a balk.
The young sophomore moundsman settled down in the late innings and allowed only three more hits. Thus, the game ended in triumph for Norwood, 9-2.
Today, the Seafatimen travel to Walpole for a contest there. Walpole has won two of their three games and could be trouble. Next Monday, the squad will play their first home game at the H. Bennett Muray Field, formerly the High School Field.
The field is in excellent condition and ready for use. Milton will be the opposition.
Diamond Dust
The undefeated Norwood High squad took over undisputed possession of first place in the Bay State League last Monday with their win over Wellesley Walpole was beaten by Natick 6-3 for their first setback, and Dedham was trounced by Nedham, 9-0.
Natick, Walpole and Dedham all have 2-1 records and are deadlocked, for second position in (he league standings. . .
Pete Dixon was robbed of a sure base hit in Monday’s game. He lashed a hot grounder between short and third Bob Borgman made a diving stop of the drive and his throw to first beat Dixon by a stride …
Ed Feeney, Norwood right-fielder, hit a drive that carried over the fence in distant right field in Monday’s game. The only problem was that the wallop was foul by four feet.
Junior V Wins, 6-5
The Junior Varsity came from behind to defeat the Wellesley Seconds, 6-5, in an abbreviated 5-inning contest at the Balch Field in Norwood.
Wellesley tallied twice in the first and Norwood counteracted with one The hot Wellesley club scored three more in the second to rush ahead, 5-1.
Sophomore flychaser Walt Virginski walloped a home run with the bases empty the bottom of second to bring the count to 5-2. The Richardsonmen closed the gap with two more tallies in the third. Frank Babel came in on relief and blanked Wellesley through the fifth frame.
In the bottom of the fifth, Dick Pellowc singled and went to second as Bill Buckley reached on a base on balls. Bill Grudinskas tied up the affair with a single that sent Pellowc across as Buckley took third. Chuck Mullen looped a fly to right that was dropped and Buckley crossed the plate with the sixth and deciding run. The game was called by agreement.
Dick Pellowe had a perfect day at the plate with three hits in three trips to the plate. Pellowe now has a season average of 833 with five hits in six at-bats. He is leading the club in that department.
The Jubilant Junior Varsity, meets Walpole Seconds today at the latter’s field. Next Monday, the Milton J V.’s will provide the opposition. The tilt will take place at Norwood.
