Despite a spectacular three-straight-goals performance by Toots Cahoon to bring Marblehead from a 0-3 deficit to a 3-3 tie midway through the third period last night at Boston Garden Norwood buret the Magicians’ State Tourney bubble with a 4-3 win by taking advantage of a tactical error on the part of one Header.
Late in the third period after Cahoon had drawn Marblehead even a Magician attempted to clear the puck and inadvertently passed it across his own net. Norwood latched onto it and at 7:45 Tom Shea rifled a 15-footer home to win the game
In another quaterfinal game North Shore League No 3 entry Malden Catholic whipped Newton 6-2 behind Bob Reardon’s four-goal performance.
The victory by Norwood ended an outstanding season on a sour note for the Magicians who had swept undefeated through 21 games.
Shea’s goal his second of the night overshadowed the three-goal performance by Cahoon and a spectacular display of goal-tending by Scott Sumner
This contest wasn’t decided until the final buzzer Marblehead was a gallant team all the way It fell behind 3-0 in the second period but with Cahoon leading the charge managed to pull even 3-3 midway through the third period
Scott Sumner was spectacular in the goal as was his Norwood counterpart Neil Higgins Sumner finished with 12 saves five of these posted on Norwood skaters coming in alone.
In the second period he sprawled on the ice to block a shot by Dennis Hebner men while on his back he lifted his leg in time to kick out a rebound attempt by Pete Oberlander after Cahoon had rallied his team to within one goal.
Marblehead won the opening faceoff but after that Norwood was in control for most of the first period Dick Graham put Norwood on the scoreboard early in the stanza Shea had come in alone on Sumner but Scott made the save The puck bounced out in front to Graham who lifted it over Sumner’s shoulder and into the upper right hand corner at 3 :32.
Thirty seconds later Shea collected his first marker Oberlander intercepted the puck behind the Marblehead net He passed in front to Tom- who lifted a backhand into the Upper left hand comer from 15 feet out ’
The Magicians’ Tom Livingston had an opportunity to put his team back in the contest in the closing minutes of the first period He skated in free on puck as he was harassed from behind by the Norwood defense.
Cahoon, as did the rest of the Marblehead sextet, then began to loosen up. Toot’s first goal came with Norwood short-handed.
Toot took a pass from John Ormiston at mid-ice, skated down the left boards and let fly a 15-footer from a very difficult angle, and it sailed over Higgins’ shoulder and into the upper righthand comer at 5:36.
Toot’s second goal came at 9:07 of the middle period, cutting Norwood’s lead to 3-2.
Toot skated the length of the ice on this one. He came up the middle, across the blue line, and cut sharply to his left, avoiding three Mustang defensemen. He let go a scorcher from 30 feet out which rifled by Higgins into the upper right tend comer.
Higgins saved a third Marblehead tally in this period as he kicked out a shot by Ron Dunn at the buzzer. Ron had gotten behind the defense and was on top of Higgins at the time.
In the opening seconds of the third stanza. Marblehead was given a two-man advantage when Oberländer and Tom Taylor were whistled off for interference. but the Magicians couldn’t score.
Finally, at 1:50, Cahoon pulled his club ‘even, 3-3. The Magicians were peppering Higgins from all angles. Rob Blood passed across the ice to line-mate Durai on the left point.

Dunn fired a shot toward a bevy of players battling for position in front of the Norwood goal. Somehow, Toot managed to get his stick on the puck and deflect it into the lower left-hand comer.
From here to the finish, it was hectic. Sumner, as mentioned, was great He turned He turned aside a shot by Oberländer final stanza which had ‘goal’ marked all over it, and another by Russ Tobin, who broke in alone on Scott.
Then came Shea’s shot, an interception of a bad Marblehead pass across its own net and a 15-foot bomb.
Marblehead had a chance to pull even before the period was over. Once again, Norwood found itself two skaters shy. At 9:45, coach Bob Roland of the Magicians pulled his goalie for a sixth skater, but Norwood managed to clear the puck without any further scoring.
