Two Norwood Men Are “Boots” At Great Lakes
GREAT LAKES, Ill. — Getting into fighting shape to man the warships of Uncle Sam’s formidable Navy are Iwo former Norwood men, who reported to the U. S. Naval Training Station here last week.
The new Bluejackets, known as “boots” during their recruit training, are becoming physically hardened, and are learning the elementary duties they will have to perform aboard ship. They also are taking a series of aptitude tests designed to place them in the type of work for which they are best qualified.
Upon completing recruit training the men will be granted a nine-day leave, at which time they probably will be home.
The two new Norwood Blue-Jackets are Francis IL Haynes. 17, son of Mrs. A. McKcage, 474 Washington Street, and John E. Conroy, 20, son of Mrs. Ellen A. Collins, OS Railroad Avenue.
Robert Paquette Completes Basic Naval Training

U. S. NAVAL TRAINING STATION, Newport, R. I., Dec. 7— Robert F. Paquette, 21, 40 Nichols Street, Norwood, has completed his basic training at this Station and his qualified for enrollment In a Navy Motor Torpedo Boat School.
A graduate of Norwood Senior High School and former active member of the St Catherine Senior Drum Corps, he Is married to the former Eileen M. O’Kane and has a brother, Joe, in the Navy.
Paquette was formerly a machinist helper on the New York, Now Raven and Hartford Railroad.
Zark Connolly To Enter Army
A popular drummer Instructor, Stephen “Zark” Connolly of Norwood was In the Army today after a fine send-off party given In his honor by the Senior Boys and Girls of St Catherine’s Fife and Drum Corps in the School Hall Sunday night.
The Rt Rev, Joseph Walsh, monseignor, headed the list of speakers at the party. Other speakers were Rev. Christopher Griffin, Rev. James Sullivan, Rev. Thomas Williams, and Selectman Clement Riley.
Mr. Connolly was presented with a wrist watch, a purse of money, and Rosary Beads from his friends at the party. He also received a modal from Father Griffin,
The party included entertainment and refreshments. Connolly has been a drummer Instructor for a long time and he left yesterday for service in the Army.
Lieutenant Lotbrup Rich, son of Mr. and Mn. Charles Rich of 6 Beech Street, left Sunday for his station at Miami, Florida, after a furlough at his homo tn Norwood.
Ensign Baker Leaves For Active Duty
Ensign Richard W. Baker. U.S NR of Mr/ and Mrs. Harold W Baker of 212 Vernon Street, Norwood, and husband of the former Priscilla Northrup, has completed a five-months’ course at the Naval Training Station at Harvard College and will leave Saturday
George A. Bailey. Jr, of Walnut avenue was called to the Newport Naval Training Station in Newport, R, 1., last Tuesday. He is the son of George and Kathleen Bailey . . .
The first Norwood women to join the WAVES, Navy Auxiliary, will leave soon to boot camp where they will don smart Navy uniforms and start their training. Making his way through the acrid smoke that is believed to have felled many of the merrymakers in the Cocoanut Grove fire, Russell Richwein. 13, E. S. N., I of Norwood, climbed through n window to safety, it was learned last week. Seaman Richwein is the son of Mrs. Emma P. Rowell of 392 Pleasant Street and left yesterday for Newport. R. L.
