Today is a big day for all Norwood High track enthusiasts. The first meet of Norwood’s first season of Cross Country team is taking place at the High school and surrounding areas. Wellesley is the opposition in the premiere performance of this fascinating sport.

The Junior Varsity runs first, to be followed by the Varsity group. The course goes from the high school to Willett Pond, back Nichols Street and finally around the track a few times to complete the 2 1/2 mile jaunt.

Five new boys have come out for the season. They are Dan Laakso, Paul Crowley, Don Holmes, Rudolph Araujo, and Jim Bright. This brings the roster to 23 sprinters.

One league ruling is that only seven men can compete for each team In the varsity race. Coach Fred Richardson has chosen four of the boys who will start for the varsity group. The speedy quartet Includes: Bob O’Donnell, Bill Sandell, Phil Howard, and newcomer Paul Crowley.

A very interesting sidelight Is that all of these boys, save Crowley are sophomores. Their early season performances has earned them the right to gain the starting nod. If these boys prove good runners, the squad will have few player problems for the next three years.

In other meets around the league, Milton will be at Dedham, Needham at Framingham, and Natick playing host to Braintree. Walpole has a bye, in oilier words, they have an open date today.

Monday’s schedule includes-

Norwood at Milton, Dedham at Walpole, Framingham at Wellesley, and Natick at Needham with Braintree drawing bye.
