If the experiment now being carried on by town officials and a local contractor is successful, the Norwood high school hockey team will have a new practice rink directly adjacent to school.
General Manager Edward C. Monahan informed the Board of Selectmen Tuesday night that the Recreation Department has been preparing the area near the standpipe, which is town owned property in the rear of the high school.
In addition to making this a practice ground for hockey teams, it will also provide additional skating facilities.
In view of the fact that the ground may not hold water, the project is still in the experimental stage, Mr. Monahan said. The leveling of the area, packing the ground down with a steam roller and covering the area with a heavy coating of sawdust after the first frost are innovations which may work as effective insulation and base.
The area will be constantly sprayed to build up the ice Mr. Monahan said. If the entire plan work out, larger areas may be treated in a similar way and this Norwood’s skating facilities greatly increased.
In connection with the experiment, Mr. Monahan said that Thomas Flaherty of the Flaherty Construction Company had completely graded the area on a volunteer basis at no cost to the town. The Selectmen voted Tuesday night to send him a formal letter of thanks on behalf of the town.
