Talk: A House Restored With Author and Restoration Carpenter Lee McColgan
April 24, 2024 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Do you daydream about renovating an old home?
Then come to the Day House on April 24th to hear Lee McColgan speak about the renovation he and his wife undertook at the 1702 Loring House in Pembroke.
Lee is the author of “A HOUSE RESTORED, The Tragedies and Triumphs of Saving a New England Colonial.”
Trading the corporate ladder for a stepladder, Lee McColgan commits to preserving the ramshackle Loring House, built in 1702, using period materials and methods and on a holiday deadline. But his enchantment withers as he discovers the massive repairs it needs. He tells this story in “A House Restored,” and as part of the Sippican Speaker Series.
Lee worked on Boston’s Old North Church, Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House, and other buildings. His work has appeared in Architectural Digest, Boston Globe, and Wall Street Journal. He lives with his wife in the Loring House in Pembroke, Massachusetts. He can be found on Instagram at @HelveHistoricTrades.
In his presentation, Lee will talk about why he wrote the book, tell three stories from the book that will include some of the building history of an 18th-century house, and share some thoughts on why he thinks preservation matters.
This free talk will follow a short Historical Society business meeting at 7:00 pm. All are welcome to attend both the meeting and the talk.
