The award of the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V’’ for the heroic rescue of two wounded comrades near Saint-Malo, France, during operations following the invasion, has been made to Frank J. Miloszewski, ex-Coxsman, USNR of 564 Pleasant Street, Norwood, it was announced this week by Headquarters. First Naval District, Boston.
Miloszewski was engaged in reconnaissance work for the Naval Task Force at the time of his gallant action. The duties of his outfit were to follow the Army after an invasion, make installations, and send back reports to the fleet at Cherbourg Harbor.
He was a member of a reconnaissance party during an encounter with numerically superior enemy forces in the vicinity of St Malo, France, on August 2, 1944.
Undaunted by the enemy’s gunfire Miloszewski administered first aid to two wounded comrades and then placing them in a vehicle along with two wounded Army men drove through enemy gunfire to evacuate them to a first-aid station in the rear, subsequently returning to the action and continuing in combat until ordered to withdraw. His unselfish devotion to the welfare of his comrades was in keeping with the highest tradition of the U.S. Naval service.
Miloszewzki is authorized to wear the combat ‘V’.
His high school education having been disrupted by his entry into the Navy when he was a senior in November 1942, Miloszewski is back at the Senior High School, concluding his course and looking forward to a diploma in June.
A crack athlete in high school, Miloszewski has shown that he hasn’t lost any of his athletic prowess by currently leading the Senior Basketball League in scoring.
His brother Pfc, Chester J., 22, was killed in action on September 17, 1944. in Holland while serving in the Infantry.
