The Norwood Auxiliary Police pistol team, undefeated in shoulder-to-shoulder competition this year, scored a major triumph recently by nearly upsetting the always formidable Royal Canadian Mounted Police team in the New England Police Revolver League postal match competition.
The local team, Class 2 winner of the December series, moved up to Class 1 for the January matches and with a score of 4681, was only S points short of a tie for the League championship. Third place Westfield Police was 35 points behind the leader and fourth place Springfield, Auxiliary Police trailed by 89 points.
From the 203 teams of Police, Auxiliary Police and Protective Associations which include nearly 1100 individual shooters, the Norwood team placed three men in the top ten Albin Johnson was third high with a scries total of 1177 from a possible 1200 points, Robert Baxter was fourth with a score of 1176 and Curtis Balduf, eighth with a 1167 total.
Two men, Eino Gronroos and Albin Johnson, became eligible for 100-Club buttons for shooting a perfect score on at least one of the 12 targets. Coach Robert Baxter had been the team’s only 100-Club member.
Norwood’s other Auxiliary Police teams also gave a good account of themselves. Team 2, led by Robert DeNormandie’s series total of, 1117 and Herbert Ham’s 1114, placed high in Class 3 with a team score of 4430 after having been runner-up in Class 4 in the November Series. Robert Nelson with an individual score of 1035, led Team 3 into Class 4 and a team total of 4082.
This was Team 3’s first taste of the tough New England Police Revolver League competition.
