The Women’s Community Committee has voted to give its recently purchased victoria to the Recreation program, it was announced today.
This decision was reached at the regular monthly meeting which was held on Tuesday. November 21. Up to the present time the victrola has been used to furnish music for the Friday night dances, which the Women’s Community Committee have sponsored over a period of years. The committee purchased this victrola when there was a danger of having to curtail these dances because of a shortage of orchestras. Now that the dances have been incorporated into the new recreational program, the committee is happy to make this contribution to the Recreation Pro: gram, it was announced The gift is made with but one provision, i.e. that the victrola remain in Social Hall so that it will be available to other community .groups, such as Camp Fire Girls, Scouts, etc.
EXPRESSION OF FAITH
For years, it is pointed out. the Women’s Community Committee has felt the need of supervised activity for Norwood. Under the chairmanship of Mrs. H. B. C. Riemer. its Recreation Committee has welcomed every opportunity to further this cause. As long ago as 1926 this organization raised money by private subscription for playgrounds. The Batch and Shat tuck playgrounds were the result of this effort. In 1927 the Women’s Community Committee was instrumental in placing the referendum on the ballot which would enable Norwood to spend money raised by taxation for recreational purposes. This referendum was accepted and in that same year the town took over the playgrounds and has continued to do so ever since. The people of Norwood may also remember the skating rink which the committee built at the Civic one winter. Accordingly, it is with the greatest pleasure that the Women’s Community Committee now sees this long-sponsored project reaching fulfillment in the form of the Recreation Program now actually operating. The unanimous vote to give the victrola and records to Social Hall is an expression of faith in this program, the committee points out.
Now that the need for recreation has been recognized and a program instituted, the Women’s Committee feels that As need for sponsorship is no longer indicated. But ‘in this changing world, the committee points out. there is no dirth of problems and the committee will continue its studies in other directions. It is the object of the Women’s Community Committee to study community problems —then when remedial measures arc considered in order, every effort is made to cooperate with the community in overcoming these problems. Nutritional education is a field in which the committee hopes it has laid the foundation for further’ work. The Nutrition Committee. another sub-committee of the Women’s Community Committee. had very little to report at this meeting as the work has been interrupted due to unavoidable causes. However, when facilities are again available and as the need arises, this work will be renewed.
During the week of November 27-30. the Massachusetts Conference of Social Workers will be attended. at the Statler Hotel, by as many members of the Women’s Community Committee as possible. This conference will discuss the many new problems confronting communities and the approach to these problems.
This meeting of the Women’s ’Community Committee was held at the home of Mrs. C. L. Foster, 9 Highland Street with Mrs. Eugene A. Nelson as co-hostess. The next meeting will be held on December 19 at the home of Mrs. H. B. C. Riemer, 62 Winter street.
