Superintendent Releases Schedule For First Week

Other Activites To Be Added As Soon As Arrangements Can Be Completed

Norwood’s new town-sponsored program of recreation will start rolling next Monday, it was announced today by John E. Williams, Superintendent of Recreation, who released the schedule for the initial week.

Williams, who assumed his duties on November 9th, is now operating under a provisional appointment until his status in the town Civil Service set-up is defined by the Attorney General. He has taken up headquarters at the Civic Building, from which he will direct the town-wide recreation program.

In releasing the first week’s schedule of activities. Williams pointed out that there are still several minor wrinkles to be ironed out before all the activities which are planned can be carried out. As a result, only those activities which could be set into motion without delay were included in the schedule for the week of November 20-25. However, he asserted, arrangements are being speeded to provide an all-inclusive program. As the program gains momentum, he stated, new activities will be added, with schedules being prepared a week in advance, additions and revisions being made wherever necessary.

Three activities are scheduled for next Monday night. These include handicraft for adults at the Junior High under the direction of Robert O’Neil, former school instructor here and now associated with Bendix; a Choral Group for adults at the Junior High, the first meeting o£ a 19-week course under the supervision of Professor J.V. Dethier, and supervised rollerskating at Roll Land for Senior High School students.

Tuesday evening will feature basketball at the Junior High for all over high school age; orchestra for adults at the Junior High, and dramatics at the Junior High for adults, with instruction by George Perna, former dramatics director in Waltham and now associated with Bendix.

Wednesday evening will be devoted to a Football Rally and Dance at the Senior High School from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Moving pictures will be shown during the early part of the evening with .dancing following. Admission will be free and refreshments will be served.

Thursday next week is Thanksgiving Day, Friday will be a school holiday and an all-day program has been arranged. In the morning at the Junior High, there will be basketball for St. Catherine’s Junior High School boys, with roller skating at Roll-Land in the afternoon for all Junior High children. In the evening there will be dancing at the Civic for 9th-grade and senior-high children.

Basketball for St. Catherine’s Junior High boys will be held at the Junior High gymnasium Saturday morning, and there will be supervised roller skating in the afternoon at Roll-Land.

With the exception of roller skating, all activities scheduled for the week will be free.

Williams said today that plans for the immediate future include instruction in tap dancing for all grade school children; the formation of Rifle and Boxing clubs, and possibly golf instruction.

The new Recreation Superintendent also hopes to organize a Town Team for the basketball season, with first and second teams meeting outside competition.

Arrangements are also being made., he said, to institute supervised ice hockey, ice skating and coasting as soon as weather conditions permit.
