CLEVELAND SCHOOL LIBRARY—ALWAYS A DELIGHTFUL PLACE TO BE

The F. A. Cleveland School Library located in a specially designed room, with pleasing color appointments, and furniture so light and flexible that groupings may be arranged to suit the individual situations is one of the delights of the school.

The silent flash of goldfish and the grace of living plants bring added interests to the room. The counter-level windows create a sense of openness and provide a beautiful view of the broad lawn and woodlands that slope to the shores of Ellis Pond. It is a delightful place to be at any time of day.

The Library contains, a collection of over 1000 volumes chosen to meet the curricular needs as well as the children’s interests. These books range in scope from pre-school through grade eight and are cataloged and arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification, simplified as far as expedient. A wide variety of titles in the subject fields of references, religion, mythology, social sciences, folklore, language, science, applied science, fine arts, literature, history, biography, fiction, picture and easy books are to be found on the shelves. Some books are included for the beauty of their illustrations, some for their easy vocabulary, large print and simple sentence structure, and some for being suitable for reading aloud. Other books found in the collection have a high interest, low vocabulary level for the slower reader as well as books for the more mature and discriminating reader. Many informational books are in series, particularly in the fields of science, biography aril social studies.

The Library has become an integral part of the learning and living experiences of. the students who are learning how books are arranged on library shelves, how to use the card catalog, reference books and other resources of a library. Some boys and girls assist with library duties and experience personal pride and satisfaction in their work.

With mutual interest and friendliness, the teachers and parents work toward the goal of improved library service for the pupils. The teachers direct their efforts to the .business of teaching the children how to read, the library provides worthwhile material in order that they may read, and mothers with Mrs. Malcolm Orent as chairman devote at least seven hours per week to bringing the books and children together in happy and profitable association.

The following volunteers deserve a great deal of praise for their contribution to the success of the F.A. Cleveland School Library:
