THE 79TH GENERAL HOSPITAL—England
Wounded in the right arm by a German machine gun bullet as his battalion attacked an enemy hill position near Metz, France. Technical Sergeant Thomas F. Coyne, 29. of 65 High view street, Norwood, is now convalescing at this United States Army general hospital.
“Sgt. Coynes wound is healing satisfactorily and he will return to duty after further treatment,” said his ward surgeon, Captain Edward B. French of Hyde Park, Vermont.
Sgt. Coyne said his unit attacked two small French villages. “The Jerries were firing down on us and I was hit in the arm by a German machine gun bullet,” he said. “The Germans kept sniping at. me, so I started to crawl back to my lines.”
Coyne had crawled about 100 yards when an aid man reached him, dressed his wounds and helped him back to an aid station. After additional treatment there and at a field hospital, he was evacuated to England.
Sgt. Coyne, who has received the Purple Heart, entered the Army in February, 1941. His mother, Mrs. Delia Coyne, resides at the Highview street address. His wife, Mrs. Sophie Coyne, lives at 103 Bullard street, Walpole. His brother, Corporal Bartley Coyne is with a Field Artillery unit in France.
THE 303RD STATION HOSPITAL—England
Wounded in the right leg by shrapnel as he was within 500 yards of the front in Germany. Private Peter F. Daly, 30, of Savin avenue. Norwood, is now recovering at this United States Army station hospital in England.
“Pvt. Daly is on the road to a good recovery,*’ said Captain Rudolph R. Widmann of Beverly Hills, California, his ward doctor.
“I was walking up towards the front lines when the Germans laid down a barrage,” Pvt. Daly said. “One of the shells landed pretty close to me and fragments from it entered my leg.”
An employee of Bird and Son in civil life. Pvt. Daly has served seven months in the Army. His wife, the former Lillian L. Balduf, lives at the Savin avenue address.
