NORWOOD. Aug. 29—Walter F. Tilton. 93. of 49 Beech st., philanthropist. former Selectman and widely-known figure in banking and textile circles, died this afternoon at Norwood Hospital. He was the father-in-law of former Lt. Gov. Arthur W. Coolidge.
A native of Boston. Mr. Tilton left school at the age of 12 to go to work in the textile field. Near the turn of the century he formed the firm of Clapp & Tilton Company, wholesale textile milliners of Boston. In the early 1900’s Mr. Tilton became one of the original directors of the Norwood Trust Company. He was president of the bank until it was taken over by the Norfolk County Trust Company.
Mr. Tilton was a director of the Norwood Cooperative Bank, an incorporator of the Norwood Hospital and a member of Orient Lodge, A. F. & A. M.
In 1927 Mr. Tilton purchased at a cost of $60,000 a carillon in Switzerland and gave it to the town of Norwood. The bells are in the tower of the Norwood Municipal Building. In recent years he donated between $75,000 and $100,000 to Norwood Hospital. He was instrumental in the installation of the lighting system at the Masonic Temple on Day st., and was one of the original supporters of the municipal lighting system here.
He leaves a wife. Daisy W., a daughter Mrs. Mabel W. Coolidge of Reading, and a son, Arthur C. of Los Angeles. The funeral will be held Thursday at United Church.
