Campaign Begins in Norwood For Fund to Beautify Memorial Tower Sq
Two hundred Camp Fire Girls laid siege to this town today, and before noon they had decorated everybody in Norwood with the sign of the green tag, signifying that they had contributed to a fund with which to beautify Memorial Tower sq.
Gov and Mrs. Allen bought the first tag early this morning at their home on Walpole st, and a second visit was paid immediately afterward to the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Plimpton, across the road, where Mrs. Plimpton welcomed the two Camp Fire Girls and received her tag.
Posters, painted by the Camp Fire Girls, have been distributed widely preceding today’s sale, and interest has been shown by all business concerns in Norwood. Local drug stores have contributed the cartons in which the money is being dropped In exchange for a tag, another firm has given the use of a store window for the week preceding, in which the story of Camp Fire is told graphically in exhibits. Arm bands for the tag sellers were contributed by an interested parent, and the Norwood Trust Company has volunteered its services in assisting Miss Mary Hubbard, treasurer of the sale.
Every girl in the local organization is at work today in this enterprise, wearing the Camp Fire service costume with white felt arm bands carrying the Camp Fire insignia. All incoming and outgoing trains are being met, a Camp Fire Girl will be stationed at the Norwood Theatre all day, and a disarming smile, an extended green tag is waiting everywhere.
The fund, when raised, will be turned over to the town committee recently appointed for the development of the town parks, of which Francis J. Foley is chairman. It is planned to beautify Memorial Tower sq with shrubs in the four corners of it, and greensward in the center. This plan was suggested originally by Mrs. Frank G. Allen, who is actively interested in the Camp Fire movement both in Norwood, where she lives, and in Boston, where, she is honorary president of the Greater Boston organization. With Mrs. Plimpton and many other prominent women of the town, she has materially assisted in developing the present Camp Fire organization.
A new record has been established by the local group in this respect, for the 200 Camp Fire Girls in Norwood constitute the largest town organization in the movement, in this State, and the great majority of its members have been added since a new start was made last Spring. This is also the first Camp Fire group in the State to be formed on a purely community basis, Irrespective of churches or other centers, around which other Camp Fire groups are formed. The whole community is genuinely interested in the work and is helping to make it a success.
